The aim of this treatment is to significantly reduce the movement of the muscles causing expression lines, thus improving the appearance of such lines. This clinic uses Botox.

For increased patient comfort, botulinum toxin A is reconstituted with 0.9% bacteriostatic saline (preserved) rather than 0.9% normal saline. Injection of botulinum toxin type A is noted to be less painful with the use of the preserved compared to the non-preserved preparation. The preserved reconstitution is reported to have no effect on clinical outcome and is for increased patient comfort. The use of 0.9% bacteriostatic saline is classed as out-of-licence use.

Common side effects associated with the injections include:

• Pain or stinging sensation when the injection is performed
• Localised swelling, redness, tenderness
• Bleeding at the sites of injection
• Bruising
• Numbness or itching of the area following injection
• Headache

The above usually resolve spontaneously within hours or days but may persist for longer.

Asymmetry of expression — perfect symmetry may not be achievable; that caused by the treatment can often be corrected at your review appointment.

Less common side effects to the upper face — 1%–10% risk:

• Eyelid ptosis (a drooping or heaviness of the eyelid, one or both), brow ptosis (heaviness and/or lowering of the brow)
• Facial pain

The dermal filler used in your treatment is a sterile gel consisting of non-animal, stabilised hyaluronic acid and a local anaesthetic called lidocaine. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar chain molecule, naturally occurring in the skin and throughout the body. The sterile gel is injected into the skin to correct facial lines, wrinkles and folds, for lip enhancement, for shaping facial contours including chin, cheeks, jawline and the nose, and for skin rejuvenation. The specific product used will be confirmed with you at consultation.

Common side effects associated with the injection:

• Pain or stinging sensation when the injection is performed
• Localised swelling, redness and/or tenderness
• Bleeding at the sites of injection
• Bruising. Rarely, bruising may be severe and may persist for several weeks
• Numbness or itching of the area following injection

Common side effects are expected to resolve spontaneously within the first few days of treatment. Whilst not expected, it is possible that reactions described may persist for longer and may inhibit your confidence to attend work or social events — you are advised to schedule treatment with this in mind, allowing time for common reactions such as bruising and swelling to settle.

Uncommon side effects:

• Infection or inflammation
• Skin discolouration — infection or discolouration may occur within a few days, or weeks to months following treatment
• Allergic or sensitivity reaction: itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, dizziness or feeling faint. Abscess formation
• Prolonged swelling, which may occur early or present after several weeks
• Persistent lumps, nodules or papules; acne-like formations
• A foreign-body reaction known as 'granuloma', presenting as lumps or nodules
• The blood supply to the skin may be interrupted by swelling or inadvertent injection into a vessel, causing pain, skin damage and possible scarring
